Ken - it is your call - but a loud bike can indeed damage your hearing and you will pay the price for poor hearing for many years.
It is fun to roar about for a couple of hours perhaps but unless you want to just be generally obnoxious with all of the consequences - you might just want to get a cheap slip on as suggested earlier.
We wear sealed headphones in our plane all the time because of noise concerns.
Noise is also exhausting - and that is not a good mixture when you are riding
